Rotterdam’s efforts for a better air quality it’s about to achieve its purpose. The municipality promoted environmentally friendly vehicles such as electric cars and bicycles. A recently published report of the Central Bureau of Statistics shows that the number of old diesel cars between 2010 and 2016 fell by 75 percent. The number has decreased especially after the introduction of the municipal scrappage scheme in 2014.

The decrease is also due to the expansion of the environmental zone in January 2016. This zone is a non vehicle area meant specifically for the old diesel cars which emits harmful particles. This cars are getting fines if they enter the restricted zone and these fines are being use for financing sustainable actions in the City.
